We set minimum standards to make the road transport industry safe, sustainable and viable. The Road Transport Advisory Group (RTAG) advises us about the interests of road transport businesses and regulated road transport contractors. This helps us perform our role in the road transport industry.
On this page:
Role of the Road Transport Advisory Group
RTAG is established under the Fair Work Act 2009.
We must consult the RTAG about:
- making and changing modern awards about the road transport industry
- making and changing road transport minimum standards orders and road transport contractual chain orders
- decisions to defer or suspend road transport orders
- changing or revoking road transport orders after they have been suspended or deferred and
- how we prioritise cases about the road transport industry.
Membership
The Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations appoints RTAG members.
Our President can appoint a member of the expert panel on road transport as RTAG Chair. The President has appointed Vice President Ingrid Asbury to this role.
From 26 August 2024, Road Transport Advisory Group members are:
Mr Peter Anderson | Part-time member representing the industrial interests of road transport businesses. Mr Anderson is the National Secretary of the Australian Road Transport Industrial Association. |
Mr Richard Olsen | Part-time member representing the industrial interests of regulated road transport contractors. Mr Olsen is the National Vice President of the Transport Workers’ Union. |

Subcommittees
RTAG can consult broadly, including by forming subcommittees to advise it. Subcommittee members can be industry participants who are not members of the RTAG.
RTAG must form an owner driver subcommittee if we want to:
- make an order that will cover owner drivers in the road transport industry, or
- exercise powers or functions that will affect owner drivers.
The RTAG must consult any relevant subcommittees before advising us about a case.
Current subcommittees
The RTAG has formed subcommittees to advise about applications for:
- an employee‑like minimum standards order (MS2021/1) and a road transport minimum standards order (MS2024/2) covering ‘last mile delivery’.
- an employee‑like minimum standards order (MS2024/3) covering the delivery of food, beverages and other like items.
- a road transport contractual chain order (MS2024/4).
The RTAG is also in the process of forming subcommittees to consult about:
- a new modern award to cover on demand delivery services (AM2021/72)
- an application to vary the Road Transport (Long Distance Operations) Award (AM2024/35).
A member of the RTAG chairs each subcommittee meeting. Each meeting is facilitated by a Fair Work Commission Member from an expert panel established to consult about road transport and related applications. Attachment A to the RTAG’s Terms of Reference sets out guiding principles for how meetings are held.
The RTAG is committed to consulting with a broad and representative cross‑section of the road transport industry about each application.
If you would like to join one or more subcommittees, send an email to rtagsupport@fwc.gov.au.
Tell us your name, organisation (if you have one), which subcommittee you wish to join and a brief description of why you are interested in joining.
Subcommittee meetings
Meetings are held in person at our office in Sydney and last for up to 3 hours. You can join online if you can’t attend in person. You can also send someone else if you can’t attend a meeting, or two or more people can attend together from the same organisation.
Apart from public holidays, meetings will usually be held every 3 weeks:
